I've spent some time recently analyzing OAI-PMH metadata support in DSpace instances using the ListMetadataFormats verb. I've successfully queried over 50 repositories, and found only a handful that support extended metadata formats. In more than 80 percent of the cases, the sole format supported is oai_dc. The most intriguing extended format examples are at MIT (METS) and Leiden University (a type of DIDL metadata).
I analyzed some Leiden University records and found the information needed to improve resource harvesting support through OAI-PMH, which was the focus of Van de Sompel's (and his colleauges') "Resource harvesting" article in December 2004.
To me, the greatest surprise is the number of institutions using only Dublin Core metadata in their repository's OAI-PMH metadata.
