Object Reuse and Exchange (ORE) research

I'm picking up my research on digital preservation metadata in preparation for my presentation at the Northwest Archivists conference in mid-May.

One area that I'm researching is the emerging ORE protocol. Being part of the WSU campus-wide discussion on repository systems (and looking at the lack of support for reuse in many content management solutions) makes the need for a specification like ORE much more obvious. The OAI-ORE objectives are as follows:

Develop, identify, and profile extensible standards and protocols to allow repositories, agents, and services to interoperate in the context of use and reuse of compound digital objects beyond the boundaries of the holding repository.

Here's an important excerpt from the OAI-ORE technical committee's notes: "A key requirement of the OAI-ORE scenarios for use and reuse of compound digital objects is the ability to unambiguously identify and reference both the compound digital object and its components....a further requirement is the ability to unambiguously identify and reference “views” of these components (i.e. the pdf version or the ps version of a journal article)." Note that an accessible "view" must be identified by a URI.
