Auletta begins by quoting Google's mission statement: "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and usable" (5). And it succeeded, in a way that my profession, librarianship, has been painfully slow to comprehend.
The author notes that "Google is not egalitarian about sharing information with outsiders" and having attended presentations on its book digitization project, it's clear that the participating library "partners" were far too passive in allowing Google to simultaneously digitize their collections while the vendor hid the digitization technologies being used in the process (19).
