Attending a luncheon on Portico. Ken DiFiore presented data on ARL libraries growing expenditures on e-resources as a percentage of the materials budget (up to 38%). Portico is a not for profit organization that provides a centralized and geographically replicated scholarly, e-resource archive. Its initial focus is to provide an archiving service open to all peer reviewed journals. Ken described Portico's relationship with JSTOR; JSTOR has outsourced its preservation of born digital scholarly, electronic journals to the Portico infrastructure. Currently, Portico has 42 publisher participants, with over 6,100 entrusted titles. Publishers make an annual financial contribution to support Portico. Importantly, content cannot be removed. From the preservation angle, Portico is preserving the intellectual content of the journal; publishers use XML markup to descibe their content's structure, submitting article content and supporting files (such as images).
