Attending a session on topic maps, led by my former Texas A&M colleague Suellen Stringer-Hye (who's now working with web services at Vanderbilt) and Edward Iglesias of Central Connecticut State University.
Right now, Iglesias is describing a specific method to create topic maps using the Saxon parser. Because I have much more software development experience with the MSXML parser, I did some quick searching and found this recently posted alternative method that uses MSXML. Iglesias emphasized the importance of using the XTM specification, given the lack of theoretical information on the topic. The one useful reference, which he described as dated, is XML Topic Maps.
I am intrigued by topic maps and plan to give them a try. There's a wiki on topic maps in libraries that I'm interested in participating in over time.
