user-centered design...

Today, I'm attending an ALA Midwinter preconference on user-centered design, led by Brenda Reeb of the University of Rochester. Thus far, we've talked about design principles, testing methods (mental models, focus groups, closed and open card sorts, heuristic evaluation), and reviewed the University of Rochester's site design over generations. Reeb showed the Google-inspired metasearch system, which could be explored as a model for the WSU Libs metasearch. The biggest drawback, she noted, is the inability to rank metasearch results by relevance; an alphabetical sort is presented to users.
