I participated in a great discussion yesterday on data, data silos, and building relevant discovery systems; I was joined by Richard Wallis of Talis and automation librarians and technologists from Orbis Cascade Alliance institutions.
While I was on the road, I read a short news item in the March PC Magazine (page 22), which describes a section in the College Opportunity and Affordability Act which could result in students losing federal education support (Stafford Loans, federal work study) for illegal downloading of digital music and movies. The article describes several problems with the proposed law, including the inability of institutions to monitor the behavior of students living off-campus.
