current state of e-book reader technology

I found last Thursday's New York Times "Circuits" article on e-books to be a worthwhile read, though I am somewhat discouraged by the current high prices of stand-alone reader technology ($299 list for the Sony Reader) and the limits on e-book use with my current cell phone.
