The final Friday session focused on metadata and next generation archival access systems. Bill Landis of Yale University, who was one of the CDL advisers to the NWDA, is chairing the session. Sarah Shreeves of UIUC noted some of the challenges of metadata sharing, one being the use of metadata outside of its original context (like the exposure and indexing of NWDA EAD content by Google, a key driver in consortium resource use). Shreeves added that users are more frequently discovering resources thru shared metadata, and that these records typically lead the user back to local resources or records (true in the cases of OAI-PMH and search engine harvesting).
One of the search methods mentioned by Shreeves is SRU, a protocol that I want to give more attention to at the WSU Libs to support searching and systems integration.
There was a discussion on tagging. From my experience in working with the NWDA, this would be an extremely useful capability, because users have specific knowledge about collections that they could contribute, while keeping the archival record intact.
