saa kick-off!

Right now, I'm attending the opening plenary session for the 2007 Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting. The session's speaker is Robert Stanton, former director of the National Park service. (Let's see...no caffeine, no wireless service signal...hardly a propitious start.) He and SAA president Elizabeth Adkins are speaking on the subject of diversity in the archival profession. One SAA diversity improvement strategy described by Adkins is improving the Society's web site in a way that highlights minority scholarship and internship opportunities. Her thoughts raise an important issue regarding web design. One of the things that I found interesting about Stanton's remarks was his review of some of the nation's historic National Park Service facilities,one example being the Little Rock Central High School, which was desegregated 50 years ago this fall.
