xtf 2.1 software

I'm interested in the XTF software, developed at the University of California; it's an open source application capable of supporting EAD XML and digital object access. Version 2.1 of the software was recently released. Given my experience with the DSpace stack, I'm concerned about the difficulties involved in employing a Java-based application (e.g., difficulty in extending the software). Still, XTF is a serious product for supporting access to archival resources.
