What lessons will I take from this ALA Midwinter meeting? I attended social networking sessions during the first two days of the conference; certainly, the need for library organizations to effectively embrace these tools is essential. How to approach this in terms of programming support is problematic. Currently, with the NWDA development and a planned SQL Server 2005 implementation, .NET programming is an important skill set, though supporting languages (Perl, JavaScript) have been employed in the NWDA to support interface functionality. Additionally, we have a major IR initiative underway that I expect to be more closely tied to the DSpace Manakin UI, which will involve work with XSLT programming. Based upon the presentations that I participated in, languages/technologies such as Python and Ruby on Rails are useful in integrating social networking tools.
